As some of you know, I also run Statues of Budapest, an Instagram account detailing the history of the city through its sculpture. This weekend a covered the new statue of Rudolf Illovszky, Vasas’s most successful manager. Hope you enjoy.

Rudolf Illovszky was one of Hungarian football’s many great managers, leading the national team to Olympic silver and winning the league with Vasas FC four times. He stuck with the team throughout his professional playing career and managed them in six different spells. This statue is outside the newly rebuilt stadium that bears his name. I’ve been a season ticket holder at Vasas since arriving in Budapest (to the surprise of most of my students – and no – I’m not switching to Fradi). I also write a football blog about the different teams I’ve followed during my travels (substoryblog.com – I’ve linked to it in my bio). I’ve always seen football as a power for good in communities, and I’ve certainly been made to feel very welcome by the folks in Angyalföld. This is a statue by Márk Lelkes (who has created quite a few sporting statues, including one at Csépel and the new Puskás statue) and was unveiled in September.

A Tour of the New Vasas Stadium (Illovszky Rudolf Stadium)

The nearly-completed Illovszky Rudolf Stadion – future home of Vasas FC.

Due to an improbable series of events, I ended up being interviewed on Hungarian national media for creating an Instagram account about statues (@statuesofbudapest – should you be curious). The topic of the interview turned to football and I mentioned how I’d come to support Vasas since arriving in Budapest (namely – I like underdogs and the shared ironworking history of Vasas and Middlesbrough).
