The nearly-completed Illovszky Rudolf Stadion – future home of Vasas FC.
Due to an improbable series of events, I ended up being interviewed on Hungarian national media for creating an Instagram account about statues (@statuesofbudapest – should you be curious). The topic of the interview turned to football and I mentioned how I’d come to support Vasas since arriving in Budapest (namely – I like underdogs and the shared ironworking history of Vasas and Middlesbrough).

Before coming over to Hungary I lived in Tokyo and followed Verdy who – like Vasas FC – are another former championship-winning side fallen on hard times. Tokyo Verdy (formerly Yomiuri Verdy and Verdy Kawasaki) won Japan’s top flight 7 times in the 80s and 90s, boasting players such as legendary goal-snaffler Kazu Miura and Brazilian-born Japan international Ruy Ramos.

So the Károly Kis reign of terror at Vasas FC ends after just a few months, the doughty veteran has been given the boot after proving unequal to the tasks of:
A) motivating his players past the 45 minute mark,
B) holding on to any sort of lead,
and C) beating teams whose home crowds are slightly sparser than a Katie Hopkins dinner party.

It’s been a month since I’ve been to a Vasas game due to a combination of holidays and away games (I love you Nyíregyháza Spartacus, but I’m not travelling 142 miles to see you play), and things have been slowly grinding to a halt on the Vasas promotion train. A run of 4 straight draws has somehow not precipitated a massive slide down the table due to the unpredictable nature of NBII results, but the 8 goals shipped in those games is a worry.

Continue readingThis was supposed to be the first game in SC Vasas’ newly-rebuilt Illovszky Rudolf Stadium but construction is behind schedule, so instead I head up to the venue of last season’s ignominies, the Szusza Ferenc Stadium. The ground (surrounded by industrial chimney stacks in the stereotypical way that lower league venues usually are) is in Újpest, the 4th District in the very north of the city.
Continue readingAlthough Vasas were hoping to be in their newly rebuilt Illovszky Rudolf Stadium this season, the news came out last month that they’d be remaining in Újpest for a while yet. Wandering over to the site it’s not difficult to see why. The place is nowhere near done yet.
